A policeman died from his own gun in Sitio Sudlon, Barangay Lahug, Cebu City at 3 a.m. yesterday. Investigators think that SPO2 Victor Ruel Ayuman may have been hit on his chest accidentally. Ayuman, who is assigned at the Mandaue City Police Office, was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead.

An active police officer died after his gun reportedly went off and hit him inside his home in Sitio Sudlon, Barangay Lahug, Cebu City at 3 a.m. yesterday.

Investigators are not ruling out the possibility that the gunshot wound in the chest of Senior Police Officer 2 Victor Ruel Ayuman was caused by an accidental firing.

Ayuman was rushed to a private hospital, where he was declared dead. He was assigned in Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO)-Operations Branch.

Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) Director Joel Doria said the homicide detectives are still investigating the incident and they are waiting for the result of the autopsy to determine if the police officer has committed suicide.

He said an initial examination showed the slug tore through the officer’s heart.

Before the incident, Ayuman’s wife said that her husband told her to prepare his uniform.

She saw Ayuman cleaning his government-issued firearm, a 9mm pistol.

While ironing Ayuman’s uniform, she heard a gunshot from the room. She rushed inside and saw her husband sprawled bloodied on the floor.

Investigators found a bottle of liquor and Ayuman’s service 9mm pistol near his body.

Some neighbors told homicide investigators that they heard a single gunshot from the officer’s room. He was reportedly ill.

Last July 25, Ayuman posted on his Facebook account a message from lessonslearnedinlife.com: “Loneliness doesn’t come from being alone. It comes from feeling that nobody cares.”

SPO2 Wetzel Berry, a homicide detective, said Ayuman was always in jovial mood at work.

“He was a good investigator. He was always focused on the case he led to investigate,” Berry said in Cebuano.

Ayuman was a former investigator of CCPO-Homicide Section before his transfer to MCPO a few months before the elections last year.

His other former colleagues at Homicide Section, including SPO2 Ruth Violango, posted tributes for him on Facebook.

“A homicide colleague and a friend, you will always be remembered, chief Ayu,” wrote Violango. /
