Twitter hashtags turned 10 yesterday.

While a lot of people are misusing hashtags, using the pound sign #JustForThe­SakeOfUsin­gThem, there is actually a practical use to them. This allows netizens to sort out tweets according to their preference or the subject of their interest.

The use of the hashtag was proposed by Chris Messina, the open source advocate—not the actor, through a tweet on Aug. 24, 2007: "How do you feel about using # (pound) for groups. As in #barcamp [msg]?"

According to Twitter, 125 million hashtags are used daily in order to start conversati­ons in the social media platform.

Because of the widespread use of hashtag, in 2014, the word was added to the Oxford English Dictionary.

Here are among the more memorable hashtags according to Us magazine.

#Covfefe – No one knows what this means but it trended earlier this year when US President Donald Trump tweeted: “Despite the constant negative press covfefe...”

#TheDress - When people couldn't figure out if the dress (in photo) was colored black and blue or white and gold in 2015, they tweeted about it. #BlackLives­Matter – It started when neighborho­od watch coordinato­r George Zimmerman fatally shot an unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin in 2012. A year later, Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder. This hashtag then trended on Twitter and now, Black Lives Matter is a movement. S
