Striker beats grappler in CEFL Respect fight
The striker won over the grappler as Tonix Borres got the close split decision over Cipoz Guadez in the main event of Cebu Extreme Fight League - "Respect" last Saturday night at the Cebu City Sports Institute.
Borres, a former amateur boxer, came into the fight to strike but Guadez, a BJJ blue-belt, hung on with him in the striking department.
Borres, however, was more dynamic with his strikes with some spinning kicks and roundhouse head kicks. Guadez controlled the fight every time they went to the ground.
It was a closely contested fight and could have gone either way. Two of the judges preferred the striker and scored it both at 29-28 for Borres, while the other judge gave all three rounds to Guadez, 30-27.
"Cipoz was tough, he's a veteran but I was just a bit ahead of him in striking," said Borres. "For now, I want to improve more on my ground game."
Borres, who'll be seeing action in October in Dipolog, improved to 3-0, while Guadez lost his MMA debut and dropped to 0-1.
Nigerian Simon Uchenna also won a tight split decision over heavier Rodel Valizado.
Two judges had it 29-28 and 2927 for Uchenna, while the other judge scored it 29-28 for Valizado.
In the undercard, Allan Albindo stopped Arnel Bitoy in the opening round with a knee to the midsection. Clint Jun Bahala destroyed Jaymar Quinelitan also in the first round with a flurry of punches. Joel Jabonero Jr. forced Alex Calderon to quit in the first round due to a shoulder injury from a vicious body slam.
Giovane Macasling submitted Mark Tapales in the second round with an armbar. Jhon Agustine Simbajon beat Christian Villanueva by unanimous decision in a kickboxing match. Veteran John Edu Torbiso forced Samuel Gumaya to tap out with an armbar in the second round. Radel Dela Cerna didn't break a sweat with a walkover win after Dexter Sanchez was a no-show in a kickboxing match. Reymund Jackosalem scored a first round technical knockout of Laurence Bendijito.
Jess Boquiden scored a first round technical knockout over Aliyah Kaye Torbiso in a female kickboxing match. Diosdado Booc stopped Jowargen Limpangug in the second round. Michael Rebayos won by unanimous decision over Marvin Rabanos.
