5 medical students get full scholarship plus allowance

For its new Chairman’s Scholarship Program, Southwestern University ( SWU) Phinma scouted the best students in the country who show potential and promise in becoming exceptional medical doctors in the future.

“The medical profession is one of the noblest professions—but it is also one of the most expensive. We went out of our way to find the best students who show promise in becoming doctors but just can’t afford,” said SWU Phinma presi- dent Chito Salazar.

In a press conference at SWU Phinma’s The Maroon Lodge last Aug. 23, the new scholars were formally introduced. The first batch of recipients of the new scholarship program are Maria Donna Agan and Marielle Danise Veedor from the University of the Philippines Cebu, Marsha Ann Jolo and Mary Vianey Pepito from SWU Phinma and Edjin Relatos from the Central Philippine Adventist College in Negros Occidental.

Applicants were ranked based on the results of a socio-economic assessment test and an evaluation of their academic performance. The top 10 then underwent the National Medical Admission Test (NMAT) review. Students who passed the NMAT took an entrance exam assessment in the School of Medicine, where the top five were awarded the scholarship.

Recipients of the Chairman’s Scholarship Program will be provided 100 percent coverage on tuition and miscellaneous fees, plus a monthly allowance. The scholarship is supported by the alumni of the School of Medicine based in the US.
