Mandaue City shows off new logo

-

The new logo of Mandaue City was presented yesterday to Vice Mayor Carlo Fortuna and department heads.

The logo is a letter M with the seal of the City in the center.

Isabel Gatuslao, a graphic designer and typographer based in Singapore, said that the “M” holds together and cradles the city’s watchtower, known as the Bantayan sa Hari in Barangay Looc.

“It is a symbol that commands respect and shows strength through its thick strokes but also vulnerability through its thin strokes. It inspires Mandaue City citizens to have conviction towards their ideal Mandaue at the same time care for it with sensitivity and sentiment,” Gatuslao said.

She said she chose the color blue for the logo because it symbolizes trust.

Lawyer Mae Elaine Bathan, the mayor’s chief of staff, said Mayor Luigi Quisumbing hired Gatuslao to redefine the city’s branding.

“The logo is part of the branding of the city that would create the direction that the mayor would want relative to his plans and his vision. He also wanted to make an identity that is uniquely Mandaue through his particular kind of mark which is the ‘M’ logo,” said Bathan.

The City Government will adopt the logo in its letter head and in the employees’ uniform.

In a separate interview, Fortu- na said the first logo was made in 1969 and was changed during the administration of the late mayor Thadeo Ouano.

He said the new logo needs the approval of the National Historical Commission and the City Council through an ordinance.

“Our logo should incorporate something that represents not just the name. What is common in the first or the original (logo) and the second (one) was the grooves, which represent industry,” Fortuna said.

Bathan clarified that the logo is just a trademark and that the Mandaue seal is still the same.

Quisumbing said the logo is for marketing, investment and tourism purposes. /
