UC squads face tall order today

-

The University of Cebu basketball teams face a tall order as the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) wars resume today at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Baby Webmasters (4-2) will play the high school defending champion Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles (5-1) at 2:30 p.m., while the Webmasters (4-3) will be up against the college champions University of the Visayas Green Lancers (6-1) in the 5:30 p.m. main game.

Prior to the UC games, the UV Baby Lancers (6-0) are taking another step toward a season sweep when they play the league tailender University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers (1-6) at 1 p.m., while the University of San Carlos Warriors (5-2) will try to arrest a two-game losing slide as they play cellar-dweller Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats (1-6) at the 4 p.m. game.

After winning its first five games, USC suddenly suffered back-to-back losses – the first was a 61-58 loss to the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars in its last first round assignment last Aug. 27 then to the UV, 70-69, last Sunday.

A win is very important for the Warriors as it will give them back the confidence as they gun for the top two rank when the elimination round finishes.

As for the Baby Webmasters, a win would spark the hope for them to make the top two, where the twice to beat incentive for the semis is at stake.

With only three games left to play in the elimination round, UC must win their last two games to be assured of a slot to the next round.

The Webmasters meanwhile, needed more than just Frederick Elombi Ngoh to lead the team to victory, especially since UV is loaded with local stars and a workhorse Bassieru Sackor.

Its loss to the Southwestern University Cobras last Tuesday is a good thing for the Webmasters as it opened up holes they needed to plug in order to avoid incurring another loss.

The Green Lancers, on the other hand, need to play solid game from start to finish in order to keep its winning streak going.
