Face the world, banana in hand

Hugot lines, # nagmahal and nag-emote are modern ways to make known one’s mood at a given moment. Do you know that there are fruits available in the local market that can influence our moods? Any kind of banana is considered a “happy” fruit. According to a vegetarian, bananas just make you feel elated.

When you have problems sleeping, the vegetarian added that you just have to munch one or two leaves of either basil or tarragon.

“There is a dramatic connection between diet and emotions.” This is the finding revealed by several physicians and nutritionists on besthealth.com.

Nutritionist Patrick Holford, author of “The Feel Good: 10 Proven Ways to Boost Your Mood and Motivate Your- self,” says that food influences neurotransmitters (mood chemicals that are produced in the brain).

Dr. Nishi Dhawan, co-founder of West Coast Women’s Clinic in Vancouver, supported Holford’s claim, saying that our diet influences our emotions, concentration and energy and that by contrast consuming too much sugar, alcohol and caffeine can cause low moods by bringing up inflammatory weapons in the nervous system.

My research reveals that pumpkin seeds, leafy greens like cabbage and almonds contain magnesium that can help us to be calm and relaxed. Wine not only results in a more relaxed mood but also improves our memory when taken in moderation. Cabbage relieves stress.

Do not be surprised when you are in a happy mood if you have just consumed some servings of either asparagus or beans, peas, egg yolks, sunflower seeds or spinach that contains B vitamins that keep homocysteine, an amino acid—a predictor of depression—low. Omega 3, fatty acids in fish, ground flax seed, hemp and avocado oil may relieve and protect against depression. Oily fish is one of the highest sources of Vitamin D. Deficiency in vitamin D can cause low moods.

Spinach, bell peppers, clams and other seafood such as oysters, mussels, octopus and liver are rich in iron and B12. Deficiency in iron can cause anemia.

Foods to eat to be alert and focused are avocados, bananas, beans and poultry. For concentration, seeds, nuts and beans that are rich in zinc are recommended.

Chromium found in onions and Romaine lettuce regulates our blood sugar. Chamomile tea and a slice of lemon help to avoid anxiety. Before heading to the door, grab a banana. Have a nice day.
