‘Mystery’ flagged driver a resident of Davao City
Traffic enforcers in Lapu-Lapu City flagged down a motorist for entering a no-entry area near the public market yesterday at 9:50 a.m.
The driver stopped, but much to the surprise of Roldan Andales and Perry Panchito of the City Traffic Management System (CTMS), the former would not open the vehicle’s window or get out.
The spectacle caused traffic on J.Y. Dela Cerna St. in Barangay Poblacion. Curious onlookers speculated on the identity of the driver, as this could not be ascertained because of the white Toyota FJ Cruiser’s heavily tinted windows.
Andales and Panchito sought the assistance of the Lapu-Lapu Police Station (LPS) 3.
The station sent a team that included members of the Special Weapons and Tactics to the scene.
Chief Insp. Junnel Caadlawon, chief for operations of the LapuLapu City Police Office, said a policeman tried to talk to the driver, only to be ignored.
When lunchtime came, the driver was observed eating what looked like a burger.
Authorities sought the help of South Korean nationals in the city in case the occupant was their countrymen, but the foreigners, too, were ignored.
PO3 Dante Auxtero of LPS 3 said they received information that CTMS personnel deflated the vehicle’s tires to ensure it won’t go anywhere. Police later cordoned off the vehicle.
At 6:30 p.m., the driver finally emerged. He was identified as Miguel Guiñez, 51, a resident of Davao City.
It was not yet known why Guiñez refused to communicate with authorities or leave his vehicle.
