20 minors in Brgy. Quiot rescued from ‘gangs'

The Punta Prinsesa Police and the barangay official of Quiot rescued more than 20 minors believed to be members of the Kalmados and Branston Gang.

“These kids are vulnerable to malicious persons. We wanted to shield these kids from bad influence to keep them safe. We all know as we have experienced in the past nga kaning mga grupoha pwede ni sila mag away-away unya we don’t want violence labi na sa mga bata (these kids fight each other),” Chief Insp. Ramoncelio Sawan, head of the Punta Prinsesa Police said.

Sawan said that Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak reported to them the presence of gangs not only in their area but also in Pardo and Mambaling.

On Wednesday night at 10 p.m., Police Station 10 patrolled Barangay Quiot where the gangs were reported to converge. Police and barangay officials were met by minors, some of whom lived in other barangays and were there to hang out with their “gangmates.”

“We handled them carefully so that they won’t get hurt. Some threw stones at our patrol car and one of them even threw a glass bottle at us,” Sawan said.

Sawan said most of the minors were students and were led by out-of-school youths.

Cebu City Police Office Director Joel Doria encouraged schools to conduct an information drive for their students.

“They should have an information drive in their schools. The barangay should also implement their ordinances like the curfew,” Doria said.
