USC Baby Warriors outlast SHS-Ateneo de Cebu for Passerelle title, 66-62

The University of San Carlos Baby Warriors turned on the heat in the second half to score a thrilling 66-62 win over the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles in the Passerelle division championsh­ip of the 32nd SBP-Passerelle twin tournament at the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.

In the Small Baskeeters of the Philippine­s (SBP) category, the SHS-AdC Magis Eagles unseated the University of the Visayas with a lopsided 67-39 win.

Trailing all the way until the end of the first half, USC turned to Justin Ian Betinol and Reinhard Jumamoy to rally the Baby Warriors to a 46-43 lead at the end of the third period.

Lowell Jhan Francis Chan and Leobert Andrew Casinillo tried to ignite life back into the Magis Eagles but USC did just enough to keep the lead until the final buzzer.

Jumamoy, who scored eight of his team-high 14 points in the final period, was named the tournament MVP.

Rauric Panimdim finished with 11 points and Betinol scored all of his 10 points in the third period for the champions.

Chan topscored for SHS-AdC with 13 points and Casinillo added 11 markers.

The title was USC’s first since the 2013 edition.

Meanwhile, SHS-AdC kept UV

Both champions will represent Cebu City in Regional Finals in October

from scoring in double digits in the first two quarters and kept on pounding on the smaller opponents in the next two quarters to dethrone the Baby Lancers.

Jared Bahay topscored with 17 points, including 12 in the second period, and was named the SBP tournament MVP. Kristian Michael Porter scored all of his 13 points in the final period and Stephen Joash Cutamora finished with 12 points for SHS-AdC.

Daniel Padilla led UV scorers with 11 points and Jaypee Lazarte finished with 10 points.

USC and SHS-AdC will now prepare for a tougher battle as they are scheduled leave for Iloilo City for the Visayas Finals on Oct 7. and 8.

The SHSC-AdC Passerelle team and the USC SBP teams also won the Sportsmans­hip awards.

The trophy, which was bigger and taller than the champion’s trophy, was given to the team that displays the best example of sportsmans­hip.
