ATHLETICS UC, USC dominate Cesafi track and field tourney

The University of Cebu's ( UC) Marvin Rafols highlighte­d the final day of competitio­ns of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) after breaking a record in the boys triple jump event yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Rafols erased the 14.10-meter record he set last year in the boys triple jump after jumping 14.28 meters yesterday.

When the dust settled, UC and the University of San Carlos (USC) dominated the event splitting the overall titles by themselves.

UC topped the men's and girl's divisions, while USC dominated the women's and boy's categories.

UC grabbed 12 gold medals, five silvers and seven bronzes in the Men's division.

Meanwhile, leading the men's college squad to victory were Benjamin Reynes and Prince Joey Lee. Reynes won the gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 400m, while Lee won the 3,000m steeple chase, 5,000m and 10,000m run. UC also won the gold in the 4x100m relay.

The other gold medal winners from UC in the men's division were Jan Moses Estrada in the shot put event, Angel Mark Sicad in discus throw; Ronnie Durano in javelin throw;, Kenneth Robledo in high jump; and Niño Vincent Soria in long jump.

In the women's division, USC bagged 17 gold medals, four silvers and five bronzes.

Joselu Rebalde led the team with golds from the 100m, 200m and 400m events. The other multiple gold medal winners were Geniecel Saballa (800m and 1,500m); Melody Perez (3,000m and 5,000m); abd Roneth Ayuda (100m hurdles, 400m hurdles and high jump). USC also won the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. The other gold medalists from USC were Ma. Rica Cabarubias (5K walk); Bera Rose Saragena (discus throw); Jossieryl Aligato (triple jump) and Jelly Mae Paderes (long jump).

USC finished at the top of the boy's division with nine gold medals, six silver medals and six bronze medals, just a gold and bronze medal ahead of second placer UC, which grabbed eight gold medals, six silver medals and five bronze medals.

UC topped the girl's division with seven gold medals, six silver medals and six bronze medals. UC was in a close race with USC, which finished with five gold medals, five silver medals and four bronze medals.
