CIT-U communication student wins Asean oratorical contest

A student from the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) bagged the grand prize of the Asean 2017 Oratorical Contest, which was held last Sept. 15 to promote awareness and greater interaction among the people in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) community.

Ten schools participated in the contest held at the Rizal Public Library in Cebu City, where they had to answer the question, “What is Asean and How will it benefit you?”

Eri Shekina Yoshino, fourth year AB Communica- tions student of CIT-U, shared how the Asean principles changed the way she sees herself, that she is no longer just a part of a small island nation but a part of a bigger community. “I found a home outside my home,” she said, adding that the Asean has given her a larger community to depend on for education and employment opportunities. She bested students from nine other schools with her answer.

A student from University of the Philippines Cebu, Deane Marie Yase, was first runner-up with her speech that spoke of the opportunities that the Asean gives students from the member countries. She emphasized the opportunity to move across borders, which allows the youth to study in schools in other Asean countries.

Second runner-up Marie Genevere Nadela from the University of San Jose Recoletos believes that being able to cross borders to study, travel to or live in other Asean countries with fewer barriers widens one’s perspective. It also makes one aim for excellence, she said. /
