Philippine National Police (PNP) statistics showed that crime volume nationwide dropped by seven percent from January to August this year due mainly to the continuing war against illegal drugs.

That probably prompted PNP Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa to call critics of the anti-drug war as “ingrates.”

Bato should know there will always be ingrates because it’s impossible for the police to totally stamp out crime.

But Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III asked, “Where is the peace and order that PNP Director General Ronald Bato dela Rosa says people are ungrateful for?”

Pimentel asked that question after the killing of a councilor and his 15-year-old son in Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro.

See, the police cannot stop the killings. But people are hoping they are not the ones doing the killing of drug suspects.

A recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey said 90 percent of Filipinos wanted drug suspects to be arrested alive.

But General Bato said the police want 100 percent of drug suspects caught alive. “What’s the use of waging war on drugs if you do not value human life,” he said.

Isn’t that quite reassuring for drug suspects who ate still to be caught?

Chief Supt. Dionardo Carlos, PNP spokesman, said the police arrested. 109,090 drug offenders in 71,353 drug operations from July 1 last year to Sept. 30 this year. They are still alive and facing charges in court. He did not say anything about those who resisted the police and had to be gunned down.”
