BABY COBRAS UPSET USPF, MAKE CESAFI BOYS VOLLEY FINAL
SWU defeated high school boys champion USPF to advance to the Cesafi highschool volleyball finale
The Southwestern University (SWU-Phinma) Baby Cobras displayed their potent force and stung the defending champions University of Southern Philippines-Foundation ( USP-F) Baby Panthers, 26-24, 25-21. They also secured a spot to the finals in the boys’ division of the Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) volleyball tournament at the USP-F gym yesterday.
The SWU-Phinma clinched its second win in as many games in single-round robin semis to advance to the championship round, regardless on the results on their last game against University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters today.
The Cobras started to pound early in the first set, giving the Panthers a closely-contested set that saw two teams at 24-all. But the Baby Panthers had a costly service error and SWU’s Jepherson Pocong answered it with an ace in the next possession to give Cobras the first set, 26-24.
The second set was as close as the first one, but the offense and defense of Cobras paid dividend in the latter part anchored by Christian Rey Rom, Pocong and Niño Mhil Paciño who put the game away, 25-21.
USPF, which fell to 1-1, will face the University of San Carlos (USC), who eliminated UC, 25-17, 19-25, 25-18. The winner between USPF and USC will earn the right to face the Baby Cobras in the championship round.
“I’m satisfied and happy with the performance of my boys today. We will play USC for our final game and then well get ready for the finals. The team will have some adjustments come finals,” said SWU coach Dave Arreza.
The SWU had double victory as the girls’ team also pulled off a 2725, 25-20 win over University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R). The SWU girls’ team improved to 2-0 card, while USJ-R dropped to 1-1 slate.
The USP-F girls’ team also improved to 1-1 card with a 25-21, 2517 win over UC, who absorbed its second lose. The USP-F will play USJ-R, while SWU will face UC in the girls’ action today at the USP-F gym.
