Lorebeth Quiño Gabisan had asked her daughter Lovely Jane Quiño to end her relationship with Dominic Pahugot, after learning he was hooked on illegal drugs.
Her daughter did not listen and continued living with him in Sitio Libo, Barangay Tayud, Consolacion.
“Saon, nahigugma man siya’g maayo niya (She was deeply in love with him),” she said.
Quiño, one of Gabisan’s two children from a previous relationship, bore four children with Pahugot.
Past 6 a.m. yesterday, the children were orphaned. The couple’s eldest is a girl, 5; followed by another girl, 4; then a boy, 2; and the youngest is a girl, three months old. Quiño has a nine-year-old son with a former boyfriend.
Pahugot, 27, beheaded Quiño, 24, with a bolo inside their house, then one of the police officers who tried to arrest Pahugot shot him after he tried to attack them.
Pahugot, who wore a rosary, was found by the police on the shore of Cansaga Bay, around 500 meters from his house.
Before the encounter with the police, Pahugot carried Quiño’s head and placed below a basketball board and then set a shanty on fire.
Gabisan said she would kill Pahugot if the latter was caught alive.
“Kon buhi pa to, ako’y chopchop ato (If he is still alive, I will chop him to pieces),” she said.
Quiño, who worked for a pottery shop, started his relationship with Pahugot through online chat six years ago.
Before Pahugot hacked and cut off his common-law wife’s head, the two were heard arguing last Saturday night. Their disagreement continued yesterday.
Pahugot’s grandmother Sergia, who was in a house nearby, asked help from Tayud Barangay Councilor Wilfredo Ibale, who then went to the barangay hall to call the police station. PO2 Jorge Tapales said they received the “troubled person alarm” at 7:20 a.m.
Last August, Pahugot reported- ly tried to hack Quiño, but he was stopped by his relatives. He also mauled her at the time.
Pahugot cut down the banana trees of his neighbor when he ran amok. He had been listed as one of drug users in the barangay.
Gabisan and her other relatives, who went to Libo after they were informed about the incident, blamed Pahugot’s mother Angelica, 47, for Quiño’s death.
They said Angelica persuaded Quiño to live again with Pahugot in Libo last month.
Before she went back to Libo, Quiño decided to stay away from Pahugot last month, after the latter displayed erratic and violent behavior.
She brought her three daughters to her mother’s house in Mandaue City, but she left the boy behind, after Pahugot refused to let their son go with her.
Angelica said she brought her son to the psychiatric ward of Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City last month, hoping he would stay in the facility for a longer time until he would recuperate from his condition.
Pahugot was released after he answered the questions well, but the psychiatrist gave a prescription to his mother.
Angelica said she failed to buy the medicines for her son, saying she has no steady job. She is separated from her son’s father, whom she said is also a junkie.
For his part, Ibale said there were times that Pahugot was clear-headed and the latter would find ways to earn money for his kids. Pahugot’s income came from selling firewood and fishing.
Ibale said it was Quiño who would often sell a sack of firewood to him and he would pay her P100.
“Maluoy ko kay ingnon man ko nga para palit og bugas (I pity him because he’d say he’d use the money to buy rice),” he said.
Pahugot’s 28-year-old brother is also suffering from a mental illness caused by substance abuse.
Angelica said he had brought her older son to the psychiatric ward thrice last year, but she dis- continued their visits for checkups out of frustration.
“Moinom siyag tambal, pero moinom man gihapon og bino,” she said.
Angelica said she asked Quiño to join her son in Libo because she wants the family to be intact, adding that she did not expect her son would commit the crime yesterday.
She was living with her another son in Danao City when the incident happened.
“Giisip na nako nga anak ilang anak (I treated them as my children),” she said.
When confronted by Quiño’s aunt inside her house, Angelica said, “Wa tay mahimo kay pagbuot man ni sa Ginoo,”
The aunt shouted, “Unsay pagbuot sa Ginoo? Dili ni pagbuot sa Ginoo. Binuhatan ni sa demonyo!” (What God’s will? That’s not God’s will. It’s the work of the devil!)
