DBTC beats SHS-Ateneo de Cebu, 3-1, in Cesafi high school football finals

Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) reclaimed its title as kings of high school football after dethroning defending champion Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, 3-1, in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) high school division championships yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

“We are more than very happy. We claimed it back this year. That was our goal, to bring back the Cesafi championship. The kids really got it. Even though we didn’t have enough training last week because of the rainy days, the kids still came up with a very good performance,” said DBTC head coach Glen Ramos after the match.

DBTC was hell-bent on taking the crown this year after losing to SHS-AdC, 1-0, in the finals last year.

The first few minutes of the championship match were very competitive, with both teams eager to hit the opening goal.

Josh Asignar found himself open in the right side of the box and struck low with the ball going past the diving goalkeeper for the first goal.

SHS-AdC’s Leo Maquiling and Gerald Abao tried their best for an equalizer but to no avail because of DBTC goalkeeper and skipper Joseph Kei Ceniza’s impressive goalkeeping.

In the second half, Ceniza was very busy deflecting shot after shot, showing why he’s the best goalkeeper in the tournament.

In the 76th minute, John Vitualla caught the Ateneo keeper off his line and launched a 45-yarder, making it a 2-0 lead for DBTC.

Substitute Joaquin Buyco added another goal for DBTC in the second minute of extra time, while Maquiling finally scored for SHS-AdC two minutes later. It was the first goal DBTC conceded all season long.

“When we play against Ateneo, the kids style of play usually change. But this time, I told them that we don’t change our style against them because in the elimination round we easily beat them, 7-0. Let’s continue and move forward to our goal. But in fairness to Ateneo, it was a big factor that they changed coaches. The kids were disorganized but the replacement coach did his best to organize the team but the momentum was already with us,” said Ramos.

DBTC dominated the whole season and took all the individual honors. Asignar was named MVP and also took the Golden Boot with 13 goals, Erich Orale was named best defender, Thomas Ramos was awarded best midfielder and Ceniza was named the best goalkeeper, only conceding a single goal the whole tournament.

Meanwhile, the University of San Carlos (USC) took third place honors with a 1-0 win over University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF). Yushi Suzuki scored the match’s lone goal in the 59th minute.

In the collegiate division, defending champion USC came from behind to beat University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), 2-1.
