4 share lead in Boy Pestaño Chess Open

National Master Rommel Ganzon and Fide Master Anthony Makinano and two other players were the only ones left unscathed out of 114 participan­ts of the 9-Rounds System Boy Pestaño Chess Open–27th Cebu Executives and Profession­al Chess Associatio­n Anniversar­y Tournament. This started yesterday at the Knight Attack Chess Café on the 3rd Level of Robinsons Galleria-Cebu.

Ganzon and Makinano sported four points entering the final day yesterday, along with Richard Natividad and Bryle Arellano. Top seed IM Kim Steven Yap was not a far second as he afforded a draw in the second round to finish the four rounds to lead five players who had 3.5 points in the competitio­n. This being held in honor of the late SunStar Cebu chess columnist Francisco “Boy” Pestaño.

These players are Joel Pacuribot, Edsel Montoya, NM Rogelio Enriquez Jr. and Mario Mangubat. Sixteen players shared the 10th-25th place with 3.0 points: Ralph Dalauta, Edsel Vosotros, Merben Roque, Elwin Retanal, Ruel Nuttal, Ronald Ganzon, Erwin Ababat, Rodrigo Alejandre, Carlos Cabuenos, Adrian Basilgo, Jave Mareck Peteros, Anecito Lumbab, Cheran Bartolata, Michael Joseph Pagaran, NM Arnold Cadiz, Rafael Sim, Rommel Asoque, Aaron Resma, Joe Atillo and Jeremy Tanudra.

The tournament will hand out a total of P58,000 in cash prizes, donated by Celjem Constructi­on and Developmen­t Corp., Jemar Engineerin­g, PNPA Buklod-Diwa and the Pestaño Family, to the top 25 finishers as well as the top three players in the Kiddies, Ladies, Cepcan and Senior categories.
