The Southeast Asian (Sea) Games gold medalist Mary Joy Tabal yesterday received the P500,000 cash incentive from the Cebu City Government at the Cebu City Hall.

Tabal, 28, was awarded the cash incentive for giving honor and being a role model to the youth after winning the country’s first gold medal in the 29th Sea Games in August in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

“In behalf of the Mayor (To- mas Osmeña), we turned over the P500,000 check to Mary Joy Tabal. This is as financial assistance for her trainings in her quest for Asian (Games) and the Olympics,” said Cebu City Councilor Jerry Guardo, who authored the resolution that granted cash incentive to Tabal.

“I am very excited and positive that Mary Joy Tabal will fulfill her dream for our country which was also the vision of the honorable Mayor,” he said.

Tabal, a native of Brgy. Guba, Cebu City, won a gold medal in the women’s 42-kilometer race in Sea Games after clocking 2 hours, 48 minute and 26 seconds last August 19.

“I am very happy and honored that I was given this support from Cebu City. This assistance will surely go along way. This will help my training a lot, and actually the P500,000 will be used to pay for my training cost in Tuscany,” Tabal told SunStar Cebu.

“This is a very big help because my training program is too expensive,” she said. Tabal will go back to the Tuscany Training Camp in Italy this month to start her long training for the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.

Tabal of Motor Ace Racing Team said her visa for Italy has been approved and she’s only waiting for the finalization of her flight date.
