Bustillo rules Cepca event

-

Mario Bustillo scored 4.0 points to rule the monthly tournament of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) last Sunday at the Knight Attack Chess Café at the Robinsons Galleria-Cebu.

Bustillo scored three wins and two draws in five rounds to top the tournament that was supported by former club president Noway Lara, who is now based in Baguio City.

He defeated Joe Atillo in the opening round, Jonas Bajo in the second, drew with Ruel Hortelano in the third, beat Edgar Cimafranca in the fourth and drew with Eddie Flores in the final Round to secure the solo first place.

However Bustillo is no longer eligible to earn a seat to the grand finals since he already won a seat in March. Instead, the two slots for September and October went to Bong San Pascual and Eddie Flores.

They join the early qualifiers Adrian Valparaiso, Percial Fiel, Bustillo, John Velarde, Jun Kidlat, Ruel Hortelano, Manny Abucay and Martin Kwan in the yearly final.

San Pascual Flores, Joe Atillo, Hortelano, Ramil Fernandez and Cimfranca trailed Bustillo with 3.5 points, while Lara and Dwayne Abella both finished with 3.0 points. Richard Ouano, Jeremy Bajo, Manny Abucay, Aaron Resma and Vincent de la Torre also scored 2.5 points each and Justine Luis Joseph, Denster Abella, Cecilio Aberion, Jonas Bajo and Laila Nadera each had 2.0 points.

Cepca will hold its final monthly tournament on Nov. 26 with the November and December slots up for grabs. The grand finals will be on Dec. 17. /
