Cabs urged: Embrace the digital economy

- KOC

For taxi drivers to remain competitive amid the strong presence and popularity of transport network vehicle services (TNVS), they are challenged to shape up or join the TNVS economy and become their own boss instead.

Presidential adviser for entrepreneurship Joey Concepcion III believes it is time government regulators, taxi operators and drivers, and entrepreneurs embraced the “new normal” in digital economy.

”This is something that we can’t stop from happening. So we’d better adopt and take advantage of this,” said Concepcion, president and chief executive officer of RFM Corp.

“Taxi drivers have to shape up, which means they need to also level-up their services. If not, join the business,” he added.

According to Concepcion, more than rendering a better transport service to the public, app-based ride-sharing services like Uhop, Grab and Uber, allow Filipinos to jumpstart their journey in entrepreneurship.

“We should not regulate something that we don’t know. Let us understand (it) first, how it works and allow our drivers to become their own boss,” he said. “The future of MSMEs is in the digital economy.” Earlier, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) reiterated the government’s role in supporting innovation, instead of being a detriment to it. /
