WRITER-EDITOR ERMA CUIZON’S DEATH EVOKES WHAT READERS REMEMBER FROM HER BOOKS OF COLLECTED ESSAYS AND SHORT STORIES AND THE ANTHOLOGY SHE EDITED, “THE CEBU WE KNOW.”

In 1999, “Time of the Year” (Giraffe Books); 2000. “Homecoming and Other Stories” (University of Sto. Tomas); 2014, “Woman” (University of San Carlos) -- and in 2004, the much-loved “The Cebu We Know” (Anvil Publishing), among others.

Erma Cuizon, 81, left a body of work comprising mostly of essays originally published in “Sun.Star Weekend,” which she edited, and, later, in the Sunday issues of “Sun.Star Cebu” under the section “Sun.Star Essay.”

“The Cebu We Know,” which many Cebuanos overseas read or wanted to read, is not a travel book that tells one about places and how to get there, Susan Lara wrote in a review. Not intended to make one take the first flight to Cebu. Its writers were born in Cebu or had lived much of their life there. “Some essays are heart-rending, some are familiar, some are elegiac. They’re all engaging, rich in detail and a pleasure to read.”
