Green Lancers beat USJ-R for PCCL 3x3 title

-

The University of the Visayas relied on the hot hands of team captain Joshue Segumpan for a 47-43 win over the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars in the Philippines Collegiate Champions League 3x3 Visayas Leg last Saturday night at the University of San Carlos Gym.

Barely rested after winning a tough semifinal against the University of Cebu Webmasters, 4944, UV scored the first six points before Jaybie Mantilla sprang USJ-R into the game with three straight triples.

Then Segumpan sizzled hot off the bench, hitting five straight triples that put UV ahead 30-15 at the 9:44 mark of the second half.

Segumpan’s outside shooting gave confidence to UV and they lead all the way since the game was tied at 13-all.

If not for Mantilla, who scored the game high 24 points, USJ-R would have been skinned alive as the Green Lancers were on their way to end the game with a flourish.

After trailing 41-27 with 4:37 left in the game, the Jaguars came to life once again with Mantilla sinking two triples and Fletcher Galvez and Miguel Gastador making one each in USJ-R’s 16-6 blast.

The defense of the Lancers finally clipped the production of the Jaguars in the final seconds to secure their trip to the national finals in January.

Segumpan finished with 21 points and Rey Suerte added 14 points for UV.

Unfortunately, USJ-R was forced to play with only three players in the finals since Albert Catiloc injured his right knee during their 50-33 win against PMI College of Tagbilaran City in the semifinal. /
