MCWD marks Global Handwashing Day 2017
The sound of laughter and clapping of sweet-smelling hands of 120 grade one pupils filled the library of Don Vicente Rama Memorial Elementary School when the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) celebrated Global Handwashing Day 2017 with them.
With the theme “Our hands, Our Future,” MCWD celebrates with schoolchildren every year to empower kids about the value of water and why they need to conserve it.
It is also the thrust of the MCWD to help schoolchildren learn about hygiene and sanitation to prevent sickness and to ensure they won’t miss their classes, said MCWD acting general manager Noel Dalena.
In celebration of the Global Handwashing Day last Oct. 15, MCWD went around different schools in Metro Cebu to promote its advocacies.
Children were taught how to wash their hands properly and when they should wash their hands—specifically after playing, using the toilet, sneezing and before eating.
“MCWD is not only supplying your families with water so you can shower before going to school but also for your parents to prepare food for you and keep your homes clean,” MCWD Community Relations manager Charmaine Rodriguez-Kara told the children during the activity.
Together with members of Project Aquaria, the student-volunteer group of Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U), Charmaine Rodriguez-Kara (back row, left) of MCWD and School principal Elsie Colo assist the pupils during the handwashing event. MCWD celebrated with the kids through a proper handwashing demo and games.
The water districut also introduced to the sutdents the Water Warrior, a mobile app on water conservation developed by CIT-U students, that allows players to fix leaks or catch raindrops.
“May the good Lord continue to shower you and your company with more blessings to bless others,” said school principal Elsie Colo in thanking the team for the successful activity.
