Smoking, littering bans ‘most violated ordinances’

- USC INTERN TRISHA OLIVEROS

The Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CCENRO) pledged to implement environmental laws more strictly, following an increase in the number of violators caught.

A total of 2,453 cases were recorded from Nov. 1 to 26.

Topping the list of arrests this month were for violations against the smoking ban and anti-littering ordinances.

“We are always on alert since recently we just caught 34 violators on V. Rama Ave. for dumping garbage in a specific location,” said Nida Cabrera, CCENRO head.

Private and public establishments are also not exempted from the law, she said.

“Some establishments don’t have proper segregation of trash and sometimes dump trash everywhere,” Cabrera said.

CCENRO reminded the public to be mindful of laws implemented by the City. The “no segregation, no collection” policy will be fully implemented starting in January next year.

A community service or a compromise fee of P500 will be slapped on violators.

“We follow these guidelines to lessen pollution and to maintain cleanliness in Cebu City,” Cabrera said.

She said the Department of Public Services (DPS) is not exempted if the agency will not do their work. CCENRO, in collaboration with the government of Japan and the Environmental
