The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers once again showed their dominance in the collegiate ranks by adding the Asia Pacific University Games (APUG) basketball tournament crown to their trophy case with a 92-73 beating of University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors yesterday in the Cebu Coliseum.

It was close from the start and USC entered the second half with a 43-40 lead.

But the Green Lancers came out swinging following the halftime break, using a 9-0 run to start the third, thanks to a basket and two charities by Monic Soliva, a three-pointer by Melvin Butohan and a two-pointer by Sheldon Gahi.

The Warriors finally stopped the bleeding with a three-point shot by Joshua Marata, after an almost four-minute drought.

UV outscored USC, 23-11, in the third quarter led by Rey Suerte’s seven points and came into the fourth quarter with a 63-53 cushion.

In the fourth, Suerte continued where he left off, hitting three three-pointers, and scoring 11 of his 31 points to help the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) collegiate defending champion UV cruise.

Froilan Mangubat and Malcolm Tan paced USC with 14 and 13 points, respectively, while Kurt Trangia had 10 points. /
