Drug test on teachers

- TRISHA OLIVEROS, USC INTERN

The Cebu City Office for Substance Abuse and Prevention (Cosap) yesterday conducted a surprise drug test on daycare workers and teachers in the Cebu City Department of Education (DepEd) Office during their monthly meeting.

There were around 223 daycare workers and teachers who underwent the test, 10 of whom were senior citizens.

“Upon the request of DSWS by Councilor Lea Japson two weeks ago, we haven’t immediately responded since we also have drug testing in the barangays, and we still need a permit from the DOH,” said Garry Lao, executive director of Cosap.

All beneficiaries of the Cebu City financial assistance, like the barangay tanods and barangay workers, are requested to undergo drug testing, facilitated by the Cosap.

“Daycare kay vital kaayo, sila man ang pirme moatubang sa mga bata (It’s important that they be tested, they’re the ones taking care of the kids). They should be a good role model to the students mao ng naa tay gipahigayon nga (that’s why we’re letting them undergo) drug testing,” Lao said. The tests included seniors. “When it comes to drugs, regardless of age, everyone is asked to participate since no one is exempted from the negative effects of narcotics,” Lao said.

Lao said that during their drug testing around the city, there were seniors and children who tested positive. /
