Inmates’ Christmas: Guests won’t need to ‘BYOP’

- ROLYN MAY JUMAO-AS, USJ-R INTERN JOB

The Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) has asked the families of the inmates not to bring food inside the facility on Christmas Day.

The management of the jail has scheduled a Family Day on Dec. 25 and 26.

CPDRC acting warden Audesti Miguel said that the inmates’ families only have to bring themselves since the inmates will prepare the food.

He said they want to give the inmates the privilege to celebrate Christmas with their families.

“There’s a discrepancy between the rich and the poor so not everyone can afford. What we’re trying to do, the proposal is that they (inmates) among themselves will prepare (the food). Why not celebrate the true spirit of Christmas where there is no distinction between the rich and the poor,” Miguel said.

He said that bags and gifts brought by families will be inspected to avoid smuggling of contraband.

Miguel suggested that the gifts be wrapped in a way that would be easier for the security to check.

Meanwhile, Gov. Hilario Davide III said that he asked Miguel to write the Cebu Provincial Police Office and request for additional security inside the jail on Dec. 25 and 26.

CPDRC will only allow three visitors per inmate. The families can visit the inmates from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. /
