New rides registered each month: about 15K

-

If you think the number of vehicles in Cebu has increased, you’re on the right track.

From January to November 2017, 574,819 vehicles and motorcyles were registered in Cebu Province, said Land Transportation Office (LTO) 7 Director Alita Pulga.

Of that group, 406,930 were for renewal of registration and 167,889 were newly registered.

This means that 15,262 vehicles, on average, were registered each month in Cebu.

Implementing a mass trans- port system, like a Light Rail or Mono Rail Transit, would encourage more people to take public transportation instead of using their own vehicles, an official said.

“The LTO has admitted that there is a steady increase in the number of new vehicles, but we have the same road network. We should have an efficient mass transport,” said Councilor Joel Garganera, who chaired the council committee on transport until July 2017.

Ever wondered why traffic is getting worse in Cebu? The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has an answer: Cebu now has more than half a million registered motor vehicles and motorcycles as of this month.

LTO 7 Director Alita Pulga said that of the 574,819 motor vehicles and motorcycles in Cebu Province, 406,930 were up for renewal of registration and 167,889 were newly registered.

This means that in 11 months this year, 167,889 vehicles and motorcycles were added to the 406,930 registered vehicles.

If the number of new vehicles will increase next year, Cebu may have 800,000 registered vehicles by the end of 2018.

Pulga said that LTO registered 125,780 new vehicles in 2014; 154,924 new vehicles in 2015, an increase of 29,144 units or 23.17 percent from 2014; 163,587 in 2016, or an increase of 8,663 units or 5.59 percent compared to 2015; and 167,889 as of November 2017, or 2.63 percent higher compared to the same period in 2016.

The 406,930 renewal of registration in LTO district offices and extension offices in 2017 are: 53,021 in Carcar City; 112,888 in Cebu City; 20,452 in Danao City; 41,606 in Mandaue City; 29,164 in Medellin; 86,445 in Talisay City; 17,548 in To- ledo city; 45,806 in Lapu-Lapu City.

In Region 7, Pulga said there is a total of 771,430 motor vehicles and motorcycles, including the 167,889 newly registered units in Cebu.

Of the 771,430 units, 406.930 are registered in Cebu; 93,397 in Bohol; 89,393 in Negros Oriental; and 13,821 in Siquijor. Of the 93,397 in Bohol LTO offices, 18,292 are registered in Jagna; 50,731 in Tagbilaran City; and 24,374 in Talibon.

Of the 89,393 in Negros Oriental, 20,813 are registered in Bais City; 10,764 in Bayawan City; and 57,816 in Dumaguete City.

Cebu City Councilor Joel Garganera said that he used to be the transport committee chair at the Cebu City Council until he was replaced last July.

Garganera said that if the government will implement a mass transport system like Light Rail Transit (LRT) or Mono Rail Transit (MRT), the people will be discouraged to buy or drive their own vehicles.
