Kon’nichiwa! One who has no problem formulating speeches after a Japanese “hello” in Nihongo should probably gear up for the 16th Nihongo Speech Contest in Cebu on Feb. 3.
The Japanese Association Cebu Inc., in cooperation with the Japan Foundation Manila, aims to encourage those who are currently studying Nihongo to test their acquired skills and to develop the Japanese Language Education in the Visayas. This event promises its winners an invite to the 45th Nihongo Speech Contest in Manila.
The aspirants with the bravest Japanese hearts, ironically, should not be Japanese. Contestants could either be a Filipino or non-Filipino citizen who permanently resides in the Philippines. Their native tongue should not be Japanese. The contest will be open to those who will be turning 18 by Jan. 1, and who have been studying Nihongo in the Visayas area.
There are three divisions: Open Division for whoever meets the qualifications, Students Division for undergraduates currently enrolled in universities or colleges in the Philippines, and Non-Students Division for contestants who are not enrolled in school. Contestants in the Students and Non-Students divisions should not have stayed in Japan for a total of seven months.
Sponsors of the competition include the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Cebu Inc. and Consular Office of Japan in Cebu.
