Veco plants 5T mangroves in San Fernando

-

At least 100 employees from the Visayan Electric Company (Veco), together with volunteers from people’s organizations, recently planted 5,000 mangroves in the coastal area in Panadtaran, San Fernando, Cebu.

The group planted bungalon and bakawan seedlings along the Panadtaran coast, which is near the construction area of the Veco San Fernando substation and swtiching station.

Jose Germeleo Caballo from Veco’s human resource department (HRD) said that such an initiative can contribute to the ecological balance, most especially in coastal ecosystems and for the preservation of marine life.

Corazon Canas, a volunteer from Panadtaran, said that the activity can make coastal communities less vulnerable to strong typhoons and storm surges.

To ensure the survival rate of the mangroves, the volunteers were taught how to properly plant the seedlings and the particular areas in the coastline the seedlings should be planted.

Carl Christian and Nesle Mae Villamero, Grades 6 and grade 8 students, respectively, also assisted some of the volunteers in planting the mangrove propagules.

The mangrove-planting activity is one of Veco’s corporate social responsibility initiatives in line with the Aboitiz Group’s purpose of advancing business and communities.
