GOVERNOR’S CUP AWAITS VOLLEY, BASKETBALL TEAMS

For the first time, Cebu Province Sports Commission to hold Governor’s Cup for volleyball and basketball CPSC to allocate P1.1 million for basketball tournament, another P600,000 for volleyball event

Volleyball and basketball players will have something to look forward to as the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) will host the cash-rich Governor’s Cup early next year.

The first Governor’s Cup Volleyball Tournament is set to open on Feb. 18 with 40 teams expected to clash for the grand prize of P300,000.

“Right now, we have around 30 confirmed teams. We’re expecting around 40. The teams will have until Feb. 5 to submit their lineup,” said CPSC executive director Ramil Abing.

Brackets for the 18-under volleyball tournament for women will be finalized on Jan. 10.

Before the volleyball tournament starts, the organizer will conduct a refresher course for coaches and team officials on Jan. 25 to 26.

“We will invite a resource person for the refresher. We are doing this for the coaches, especially those who are coming from the provinces. Rules of the game will be discussed in the refresher,” said Atty. Abing.

The second placer will win P200,000 and the third placer will get P100,000. There will also be cash prizes for the team who make it to the quarterfin­als and semifinals.

“The cities and municipali­ties are now starting to form their teams and scout for players for this tournament,” said Abing.

All the 46 towns and five cities of Cebu Province are invited to take part in this tournament and Abing said that varsity players are allowed to play for their town or city.

After the volleyball tournament, CPSC will shift focus to the 2nd Governor’s Cup 21-Under Basketball Tournament, which is set to open in April.

The champion team will win a whooping P500,000, the second placer will pocket P300,000, the third placer will win P200,000 and the fourth placer will bag P100,000.

More than 40 basketball teams that have confirmed its participat­ion.

“We have more teams right now and it’s because of the success of the first year of our Governor’s Cup basketball tournament,” said Abing. /
