His colleagues in the council described Cortes as “an epitome of a good public servant.”

Cortes, whose colleagues in the Mandaue City Hall called him Tatay Jun, was serving his last term as city councilor.

“Tay Jun is truly one of my mentors in public service. He set an inspiring example, especially to us who are new in the city council. He is indeed a tough act to follow, a fair and compassionate boss and co-worker. We will surely miss his amazing sense of humor,” said Del Mar.

Fortuna said Cortes had been undergoing dialysis since last year.

“Our City lost a great man whose dedication towards public service incredibly defied all physical odds. He will be missed by many. Farewell, Councilor ‘Tatay’ Jun Cortes,” said Fortuna.

Cortes served as barangay captain of Centro, then served as vice mayor of Mandaue for one term with then mayor Alfredo “Pedong” Ouano.
