LANDMASTERS/ BOGO TEAM ON A HOT STREAK
Cebu Landmaster/Bogo survives UV/SG-ARQ’s fourth quarter run to claim second win in Sinulog Cup
Cebu Landmasters/Bogo is off to a hot start in the Cebu City Sinulog Cup 2018 - Cebu Invitational after winning its second straight game last night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Landmasters survived a fourth-quarter run by University of the Visayas (UV)/SG-ARQ Builders for a comfortable 86-72 victory.
After a competitive first half, the Landmasters started to pull away in the third quarter after an impressive scoring performance by William McAloney and the playmaking of veteran Jercules Tangkay.
The Landmasters entered the fourth quarter with a 10-point, 58-48 lead.
UV, however, came alive in the fourth quarter with a 15-5 run, all coming from beyond the arc, and cut down the lead to 71-67 with 3:50 remaining.
Ferdinand Lusdoc, however, stopped the bleeding with a three point play to bring the lead up to seven points, 74-67.
From then on, it was all the Landmasters as it outscored UV, 12-5, in the last three minutes of the ball game.
“Our veterans are offensive-minded rather than defensive-minded. They don’t give all out on defense but when we were just up by just four points that’t when they stepped up on defense. I know their mentality,” said Landmasters head coach Junthy Valenzuela. “I believe in our veterans.”
McAloney put up impressive numbers coming off the bench with 16 points, five rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block.
“It’s pressure on me but I needed to step up because all of our big men were in foul trouble,” said McAloney.
Lusdoc also had 16 points along with three boards, four assists and two steals.
Tangkay was the team’s leader and had eight points along with eight assists and four rebounds.
“So far I’m satisfied with their performance but we need more intensity,” said Valenzuela.
Joshue Segumpan led UV with 13 points, while Melvin Butohan and Tristan Albina added 11 and 10 respectively.
