Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III urged the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to modernize their equipment to be able to respond better to fires in high-rise buildings.

Davide said that even of the BFP has the capability to fight fire, their work will improve with the use of more modern equipment.

“Ang atong BFP dunay capabilities in case of fire, say, like the one that hit Metro Ayala. Like mga ladders. I would urged the BFP also to modernize their equipment and to acquire more equipment to fight fires especially kaning mga (in) high-rise buildings,” Davide said.

Davide said he believes Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmena will think twice about his plan to ban high-rise buildings in Cebu.

“Hunahunaon pa na niya. Wala pa na siya modesider gyod. Gitun-an pa na ni Mayor Osmeña. That’s not yet final. Dili man na madiretso-diretso (He still needs to think about it before coming up with a decision. You can’t rush something like that),” Davide told the press.

“Kadaghang high-rise buildings diri. As long as mo-meet sila sa safety standard, unya inspectionon sad every often sa BFP unya mo-comply gyod sila sa requirements,” Davide said.

Osmeña had said he is considering limiting the height of buildings unless the fire department is better-equipped to handle fires in high-rises.
