MARINERONG PINOY PULLS THROUGH IN OT

Despite some lapses all tournament long, Marinerong Pinoy pulls through, survives league leader Bogo for Sinulog Cup title Mike Ayonayon leads the PBA D-League team by scoring 12 points in OT for the victory

Mike Ayonayon was scorching hot and scored 12 huge points in overtime to lead Marinerong Pilipino over the Cebu Landmaster­s/ Bogo, 89-80, to win the title of the Cebu City Sinulog Cup 2018 - Basketball Invitation­al last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

It was a see-saw battle with both teams fighting for the lead in the whole game.

In the fourth quarter, Renzo Subido hit both of his free throws to give Marinerong Pilipino a 7472 with 21.4 seconds left.

Ferdinand Lusdoc forced his way through the defense with a drive on the other and was sent to the line with a foul by Ayonayon. He made both of his charities to tie the game at 74-74.

Gabriel Banal had a chance to win it for Marinerong Pinoy but he missed his three-pointer.

The Landmaster­s started the overtime strong with two straight baskets by Prince Orizo and Lusdoc for a 78-74 lead. Subido answered with a step back jumper to make it a single possession ballgame. After John Reel Saycon split his free throws for a 79-76 lead, Ayonayon took over the game and hit back-to-back three pointers. Orizo’s freethrow woes continued aftee missing three of his next four to trim it down to 82-80.

Ayonayon, however, couldn’t be stopped as he hit a leaner and two fastbreak baskets, coming off turnovers, to seal the game with 37.6 seconds remaining.

Ayonayon exploded for 32 points along with eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block, earning him MVP honors.

Subido added 15 points, Billy Robles chipped in 12, while bigman Philip Paredez had 10 markers along with eight boards and five blocks.

Lusdoc led the Landmaster­s with 28 points along with eight rebounds and four assists. William McAloney had 15 points witg nine rebounds but fouled out early, Orizo, who had a bad free throw night of four of 13, had 14 points, 10 boards and a block.
