Ten houses on Carlock St., Barangay Sawang Calero were razed by a fire yesterday morning.

It was the fourth fire to strike Cebu City in just 12 days.

Cebu City Fire Marshal Noel Ababon said they received the alarm at 8:19 a.m.

The fire was placed under control at 8:43 a.m.

“The witness said that the fire started in an abandoned house, which housed chickens. Unlike in Pasil, where the roads were small, our firefighters managed to respond properly because the fire scene was by the roadside,” Ababon said.

Damage was estimated at P200,000.

According to an initial investigation, the house belonged to Vidal Carillo.

In a text message to SunStar Cebu, former Cebu City councilor Atty. Gerardo Carillo confirmed that Vidal is his brother and the house was their ancestral home.

With the recent fire that damaged Metro Ayala, and the three other residential fires, Ababon said they will be stricter with fire security inspections and information drives.

“We had scheduled information drives in the barangays, which will have fiestas for the celebration of the Sinulog. However, like in Pasil, the fire happened before we could do that,” Ababon said.

He assured that their information drives will push through and said that they will also meet with fire volunteers in barangays to disseminate fire response tips.

“By February, we will have a full-blown inspection and we will intensify it because of the precedence of the fires in Caloocan and Davao,” Ababon said.

On Jan. 5, fire struck the Metro Ayala Department Store and Supermarket.

Fire destroyed a three-story boarding house in Nasipit, Talamban on Jan. 13.

About 3,500 individuals were displaced after 300 houses burned in a fire that struck three sitios in Barangay Pasil on Jan. 14.

The City Council has placed Sitios Lawis Riverside, Puthawan and Sun-ok under a state of calamity.

Placing fire-hit areas under a state of calamity allows the local government to access local disaster funds that will be used to help fire survivors.

The measure was drafted by majority floor leader Margarita Osmeña.
