Young volleybelles from the different municipalities and cities of the province of Cebu are finally getting their much-needed exposure with a huge volleyball tournament dedicated to the Women’s Under-18 age class.

The Governor’s Cup U-18 Cebu Province Volleyball Tournament features 29 teams from different municipalities and cites of Cebu. The tournament will kick off next weekend, Feb. 18, at the Mandaue Sports and Cultural Complex.

“Actually, we are all set. We’re already prepared. We are good as 100 percent for the opening,” said organizer Atty. Ramil Abing. “The up-and-coming an potential athletes will be known and display their skills in volleyball. It’s an opportunity for the athletes. They will be exposed in a very competitive tournament. This is also a chance for them to be discovered. I know there will be coaches from various schools that will look forward for this volleyball tournament. We expect some of the players to be discovered.” The Gov. Cup is split into two divisions - North and South. Each division has three brackets.

and Poro comprise the North Division-Bracket 1. Danao City, Carmen, Catmon, Sogod, Asturias and Balamban make up the North Division-Bracket 2. Santa Fe, Medellin, Bogo City, Tabogon and Tuburan compose the North Division-Bracket 3.

Meanwhile, the South Division-Bracket 1 is composed of Talisay City, Minglanilla, Carcar City and Argao. South Division-Bracket 2 is comprised of Dalaguete, Oslob, Santander and Samboan. Ginatilan, Alegria, Moalboal and Dumanjug make up South Division-Bracket 3.

“We’re looking at the younger players, the grassroots level. It was also proven before that the participants got a chance to study high school and college for free, not only in Cebu but also in Manila. So if you look at the line ups in the NCAA and the UAAP now, a lot of them started playing volleyball in Cebu and now they are big name stars in the national level,” said Nimrod Quinones, one of the tournament’s commissioner. “It’s an opportunity for those from the towns outside of Cebu City and the main area to get discovered. It’s a venue for them to showcase themselves.” The tournament is aligned with Cebu Province’s volleyball grassroots program.

“We want to help them discover their potential and to chart their own destiny in their sport. They will develop their full potential and get to be discovered,” said Abing.
