Glimmer of hope amid threat of a shooting war between North Korea and South Korea

After the sporadic exchange of barbs during the past months between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea supreme leader Kim Jong Un, escalating threat of a nuclear war, some glimmer of hope emerged last Friday with the opening of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeong-Chang County in South Korea.

SIGNS

The more visible signs of it:

North Korea is participating in the Games and athletes from the two countries, technically still at war, marched into the stadium together on opening day.

Kim Yo Jong, sister of Kim Jong Un and Politburo member, shook hands twice with Kim Joong-Sook, wife of Sokor president Moon Jae-in, an incident unthinkable to world watchers a month or so ago.

The United Nations Assembly adopted the Olympic Truce Resolution for the Pyongyang Games.

THEME OF HARMONY

There was also symbolism: a giant dove lit up the sky in welcoming athletes, Sokor singers belted out John Lennon’s “Imagine,” and 169 cheerleaders from Nokor joined in.

The pageantry and color of Olympic Games focused on the theme of “harmony and unity” in the ceremony that inspired the hope that the two nations might someday find peace.
