Traffic ‘top on agenda’ of metro mayors

Several mayors in Metro Cebu want a unified system to address the traffic problem.

This was what they agreed upon during their discussion before meeting President Rodrigo Duterte last night.

However, Tuburan Mayor Democrito Diamante, president of the League of Municipalities of the Philippine Cebu chapter, pointed out that the problem is only in Metro Cebu.

This is the reason the cities and towns in the metro should do their share, he said.

As for the towns, Diamante said that they should follow best practices of traffic management.

“We have to copy those towns that have established their traffic system because other towns, including my town, really need it,” he said.

Diamante assured that the matter will be taken seriously.

Aside from traffic concerns, Diamante said that they are also paying attention to habal-habal (motor taxi) drivers.

He said there is a need to educate them on traffic rules to promote safety.

Some of the mayors also saw the need to establish a satellite office of the Land Transportation Office in every district.

The meeting was attended not only by mayors from Cebu, but also mayors from other provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Chief executives not allied to the Duterte administration, including Daanbantayan Mayor Vicente Loot, who was named by President Duterte as a drug protector in 2016 and Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, were also in attendance.

When Duterte arrived past 9 p.m., their closed-door meeting immediately started.
