STUDENTS WIN BIG IN SINULOG FILM FEST
Group showcases how residents of Barangay Pasil in Cebu City kept their faith in Señor Sto. Niño despite the fire that hit their village that destroyed hundreds of houses.
For showing the resilience of the people of Barangay Pasil in Cebu City, young filmmakers from the University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu won the best documentary prize in this year’s Sinulog Film Festival.
Mass communication students of UP Cebu under Trisikad Media Productions bagged most of the minor and major awards for their entry “Unscathed” during the awarding ceremony in SM Seaside City Cebu last Sunday.
Directed by Denzel Yorong, the film tells the resiliency of the residents of Pasil after a huge fire gutted hundreds of houses in the area and how they kept their faith in Senior Sto. Niño.
The film also won best story, best cinematography, best sound engineering and musical scoring, audience’s choice, best playbill and best packaging prizes.
Yorong was named best director.
Yorong said they did not expect to win most of the awards in the competition as they were only able to come up with the story they wanted to pursue days before the deadline of the submission of entries.
Yorong said they are grateful for the support of their department as they only borrowed their cameras for their shoot.
Other winners in the documentary category were “Ang Pagpadayun ni Dodoy,” which was named second best documentary and “Buta sa Pagtuo,” which was named third best documentary.
In the short film category, “Ginhawa” directed by Christian Lat won the grand price, followed by “Merci” directed by Eli Razo, and “7:25 AM” by Roy Empleo.
Winners of Sinulog photo contest include SunStar chief photographer Alex Badayos, who won fourth place in the fluvial category and in the sidelights and decors category. /
