Of awards and artists

Glowing with obvious pride was Dr. Warfe Tupas Engracia, recipient of not one but two prestigious awards both within two months of each other!

First was the Doctor of Humanities “Honoris Causa” conferred on him by Northwestern Christian University (NCU) of Florida, USA, at Conferment ceremonies held at Harolds Hotel Cebu. Its theme, “Servant-Leadership for Radical Times,” had Conferrer Bishop Seth M. Lagunda, PhD, president, NCU-Asia Pacific Branch, doing the honors.

Of course, Dr. Warfe, being an absolutely perfect baritone, did the Invocation Worship song “How Great Thou Art” with beaming wife, Elaine, close by. Award number two was at the Cebu City Charter day celebration last month at Waterfront Cebu City Hotel, where the good doctor joined his fellow awardees as the “Outstanding Individual” for the city of Cebu.

Indeed Dr. Warfe is many times blessed, being a humanitarian radiologist, descendant of historical Rajah Tupas, and on the art and culture side, as we mentioned, a popular baritone, an accomplished Cebuano screen actor, and to complete his multi-faceted personality, a civic leader, member, Rotary Club of Metro Cebu (RCMC) and grand order, Knights of Rizal. In all humility, our good friend, merely smiles. Congrats, Doc!

Also in the art scene emerges another gifted painter, ace photographer Rudy Alix who successfully mounted his first solo exhibit at the Cathedral Museum of Cebu. His set of ribbon-cutters were prominent in their respective fields: Msgr. Dennis Villarojo, Mandaue City’s Sarah Cortes and museum owner and collector Jimmy Sy.

Rudy’s art style is predominantly watercolor, which to me, is a most challenging art medium. We found his canvases meticulously rendered giving art lovers a soothing and serene feeling.

We singled out the seascape number which zeroed in on three shades of blue: navy to dark for the water, light blue for the sky, and royal blue and ivory for the “bangka.” Rudy, we loved them all!

Many more canvases to come!
