Provincial jail scene of another ‘suicide’

Another inmate was found hanging with a piece of cloth torn from a blanket wrapped tied around his neck inside the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) yesterday dawn.

Rodrigo Dechosa, 62, who was serving time for a parricide case, was found dead inside the infirmary.

“After the head count, one of the inmates went to the comfort room to pee. When he passed by the infirmary, he saw the victim hanging,” SPO1 Winston Ybañez said.

Ybañez said that the victim’s son told them that his father didn’t show signs of depression nor talk about killing himself.

“He visited his father the night prior to the incident to massage the latter’s tired muscles. Dechosa suffered (from) back pain and needed to be in the infirmary,” Ybañez said.

In their initial investigation, Ybañez ruled out foul play, al- though he said they will wait for the results of the autopsy.

“There was also a similar incident of an alleged suicide three weeks ago. We’ll check if there was foul play and then we will go deeper with our investigations,” Ybañez said.

Dechosa was charged with killing another son in Camotes Island. He entered the facility two months ago.

Last March 5, Eutiquio Morante, 52, a native of Barangay Consuelo, San Francisco town in Camotes group of islands, was also found dead with a rope tied around his neck. The other end of the rope was tied to a steel pipe used as a clothesline in the facility’s laundry area.

Jail guards also discovered the body of inmate Joebert Talabroso inside the infirmary last Feb. 24.

It was evident, though, that Talabroso had been beaten and strangled.
