Celebrate service!
Cebu has countless socio-civic and business groups which reach out to the community, “the significant others!”
These are the Cebu Jaycees, Rotary Club of Cebu, Kiwanis Club, Zonta, Quota and Lions Clubs; sports, medical and legal groups; media and religious communities; the academe’s outreach projects, cooperatives and charity like the Young Ladies Association of Charity; business, led by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mandaue Chamber, Fiipino-Chinese Chamber; Cebu business clubs and countless more.
I have been deeply involved as co-founder of various organizations, now on their Pearl years (30-plus years): Punla Inc. founded by current chairman Dr. Norberto Quisumbing; Philippines Foundation Inc. (Perlas Awards) pioneered by the late Hernan Streegan, Joseph Gaisano and Xavier Ledesma, Pureza Oñate, Nelia Neri, Enrique Benedicto, Ben Yapjoco, Ambassador Francisco Benedicto, Antonio Veloso, Anita Y. Sanchez, Nestor Chua and presently headed by Fr. Ernesto Javier, SJ; We Care organized by then officers-in-charge of the City of Cebu after the Edsa Revolution led by president emeritus Antonio Veloso; University of San Jose Recoletos - Amparito Lhuillier Educational Foundation scholarship program since 1996; Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko - Cebu founded by Xavier Ledesma (+), Margot Osmeňa and Agnes Magpale; Cebu Newsworkers Foundation Inc. organized by Chief Justice Marcelo Fernan (+), Concepcion Briones (+) and currently managed by president Pureza Oñate, with original trustees Raul del Mar, Elvira Luym, Petite Gracia, Bobit Avila and Marissa Fernan.
The Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, going great for 100-plus years, had sustained the Cebu Business Month like its Tourism and Information and Communications Technology programs.
The chain of leadership continues for these groups, with the vision to help “the significant others through community services!”
