TRAVEL: WISH WE COULD ALL APPARATE NOW

- KATE TIFFANY YU / Writer and photographer

Every wonder what it’s like to visit the real fantastical world of Harry Potter? It’s every Potter fans’ dream to experience the story of the boy who lived. I have been to the Wizardly World of Harry Potter theme parks, but nothing compares to the making of Harry Potter studio tour.

As soon as my family decided to go to London, I immediately searched for the best Warner Bros. Harry Potter tour. This was it, a chance to explore the real studio film sets. If you’re in the same boat right now, this ultimate guide is exactly for you!

Leavesden Studios

Harry Potter Studio Tour London is a popular attraction, it’s highly recommended that you purchase your tickets online. Time slots are limited, only a handful can enter at a time.

For three and a half hours (wish it were more) I was completely immersed in the magical sites of Harry Potter. I got to relive the films, see the original costumes, props and try Butterbeer! It was everything and more for a Potterhead like me.

Before entering, staff will routinely check bags and tickets. While waiting in line, I saw young wizards donning robes in their house colors and waving wands. I came dressed in a modern Ravenclaw uniform. It made the experience feel more realistic.

The Great Hall and Platform 9 3/4

The magic begins when the actual doors of the Great Hall open. Stone walls, four long wooden tables, costumes of Hogwarts professors are on display here.

As I continued on, I was met by a huge, familiar looking train. I realized I stepped onto the real set of Platform 9 3/4. Here you can pose for the famous trolleythrough-the-wall scene that connects the real world to the fantasy world.

The Big Room

Next section was the huge

warehouse where actual filming took place. All of the spectacular film sets like the Potions Classroom, The Burrow and Dumbeldore’s Office are here.

Aside from all these, there is also a dueling stage at the far end of the room. Here, the staff will teach you how to cast spells and duel against others. Stay alert as I noticed many Death Eaters watching too.

Green screen magic

As visitors move around the set, they will find countless authentic costume props and animatronic creatures, many of which having detailed story board explanations. It’s fascinating to get close enough to touch the actual magical objects used including the Remembrall, Time Turner, Pensieve and the amazing Golden Snitch!

One of the most out of this world aspect was the creation of Quidditch played on flying broomsticks. At the studio, people can learn more about how Quidditch scenes were made with the help of green screen technology and computergenerated backgrounds. Mind you, by the time you finish the tour you will never view Quidditch the same way again!

Backlot

From the Big Room, visitors exit into a courtyard known as the Backlot, where bigger items are on display, like No.4 Privet Drive, the Hogwarts Bridge, and the iconic triple-decker Knight Bus, to name a few. Refreshments are available for purchase in this area- including Butterbeer (one of three known places in the world that serve it).

The newest addition to the attraction is the scary Forbidden Forest. At the start of the trail, you’ll be met by the majestic Hippogriff known as Buckbeak. He played a major role in the third movie and instantly became a fan favorite mystic character. As you walk towards the darker side of the forest, be warned! Someone huge and hairy is waiting for you! Sights and sounds will tell you that you are nearing Aragog’s Lair.Be stupefied by the special effects use to make the forest come alive.

Diagon Alley and Hogwarts Castle

At this point, the tour nears its end, so for the finale, the actual Diagon Alley! A cobblestoned shopping area for wizards and witches, all items in the Hogwarts supply list can only be bought here. This alley is completely hidden from the muggle world.

Last but not the least is the Hogwarts Castle model. Every bit of detail is stunning. Each angle has its own unique feature. There is a knob and button that can make the light gradually change from light to dark, day to night.

Seeing my favorite books and movies come to life right before my eyes was mind blowing that it can never be obliviated from my memory. I wish I had a TimeTurner so I could return to this enchanting place. The world of Harry Potter never ceases to amaze me, I want you to feel the magic too.

So what are you waiting for? Apparate to Harry Potter Studios Tour! Accio tickets!

For now, mischief managed!

GETTING THERE

The studio is located 20 miles or 45 minutes away from London proper. By train- catch a London Midlands train from Euston station to Wattford Junction (£ 9.90, about 40 minutes), then a Mullaneys tour bus to the studio (£2.50, 15 minutes). By shuttle tour bus-book a package through viator.com to get the best deals for your perfect day at Harry Potter Studios.

WHAT TO WEAR

I highly encourage you to dress like the characters or get inspirational modern outfit ideas online. I did come dressed in a modern Ravenclaw uniform complete with a Time Turner around my neck.

SOUVENIR PHOTOS ON GREEN SCREENS

This is by far the most tiring part, but don’t worry the line moves fast. You will be given a robe and pretend to ride a broomstick that will take you on an epic ride throughout the whole movie. Don’t forget the Hogwarts Express ride where you pretend to be on your way to school with changing views on the windows. These things do cost galleons, but are worth it, I promise.
