GULLAS CUP PROMOTED TO GROUP 1
After 23 years, the Jose R. Gullas Tennis Cup gets elevated and is now ranked a Group 1 tournament by the UTP Organizers expect hundreds to join the competition slated on June 1 in 2 different venues
Expect the Jose R. Gullas (JRG) Tennis Cup to be bigger this year after finally becoming a Group 1 tournament for the first time in 23 years.
“The Gullas Cup is now a Group 1 event so it will have higher points. We expect a lot of players nationwide to come here,” said John Pages, one of the event organizers.
The 23rd JRG Tennis Cup is one of just five Group 1 tournaments in the Visayas and Mindanao. Group 1 tournaments give out more points for player rankings under the Unified Tennis Philippines (UTP).
The 23rd JRG Tennis Cup is slated on June 1 to 5 in two venues, Alta Vista and Citi Green.
The games will be played indoors on two clay courts in each venue, so the weather won’t be an issue.
“We hope to get 200 to 300 participants,” said Pages.
Organizers, however, will accept and cater to as many participants possible.
“We won’t limit the number of players,” said Pages. “We can extend the hours or even extend the days of the tournament.”
The 23rd JRG Tennis Cup features nine age groups – 10 Years and Under Unisex, 12 Years and Under Boys, 12 Years and Under Girls, 14 Years and Under Boys, 14 Years and Under Girls, 16 Years and Under Boys, 16 Years and Under Girls, 18 Years and Under Boys, and 18 Years and Under Girls.
There will also be a doubles event both in both Boys and Girls in the 18 Years and Under and 14 Years and Under age groups.
The JRG Tennis Cup organizers are also open to cater to the pro tennis players in the near future in a much bigger venue.
But as of the now, the focus is on the youth and grassroots level.
“The thrust of Sir Dodong is always the youth,” said Pages. “Through the years we are very proud that so many champions have been in the Gullas Cup.”
