3 outstandin­g graduates receive S. Cabahug awards

A magna cum laude graduate of Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education-Physics-Mathematic­s has been chosen as the recipient of this year’s Sotero B. Cabahug Exellence Awards (SBCEA).

Eugene Dadol, a graduate of University of San Carlos, received an 18-karat gold medal as part of the award, which he received in recognitio­n of his achievemen­ts.

Dadol is from Barangay Cambaro, Mandaue City.

The awarding ceremony was held in front of the statue of Cabahug at the Mandaue City Hall last Friday afternoon.

Following Dadol as runner-up in the list of 13 finalists is Shayne Fate Cortez, magna cum laude of University of San Carlos, BSEd-Physics-Chemistry. Cortes comes from Zone Okra, Barangay Paknaan, Mandaue City.

In the third spot is Noelyn Marie Navarro, a magna cum laude graduate of Cebu Normal University

who studied BSEd-Physical Science. She is from Barangay Maguikay, Mandaue City.

Aside from the 18-karat gold medal that he received, Dadol also received P25,000 cash. Cortez and Navarro each received P10,000.

SBCEA started in 1923. The awards are handed out annually to Mandaue residents who have shown excellence in the field of education.

But there have been years that no one was chosen for the awards. These included 1925, 1928, and 1931 up to 1939. There were no awards, too, from 1946 to 1981, and 1995 to 2007.

Cabahug was a Mandauehan­on who served in the executive, legislativ­e and judicial department­s of the government. He was born on April 22, 1891 to Narciso Cabahug and Cirilia Barte.

Cabahug started his career as a justice of the peace in Surigao in 1917. He became deputy provincial fiscal of Cebu before he became councilor in the then Municipali­ty of Mandaue in 1920.

Cabahug also served in Congress as representa­tive of Cebu’s second district from 1928 to 1931.

He also served as Supreme Court chief justice and Ddfense secretary.

Cabahug was instrument­al in the creation of some landmarks in Cebu, such as the Mandaue City Hall, the Rizal Library, and the Capitol Building.
