Pingkian 2018: Tutok Sebwano held in Cebu

The University of San Carlos Cebuano Studies Center (CSC) celebrated the Pingkian 2018: Tutok Sebwano last April 20 and 21 at the Atrium of the Robinsons Galleria Cebu from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

It was held with the sponsorshi­p of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and in cooperatio­n with the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, Robinsons Galleria Cebu, Mga Anak sa Dagang and In Other Words Inc.

Pingkian, which means “dialectica­l friction” or “conflict igniting fire” was also the nickname used by the revolution­ary leader and writer, Emilio Jacinto.

On April 20, the event started with the Tertulya sa Gunita ni Jose Corazon de Jesus. A moderated conversati­on on the well-loved poet and his works was presented with panelists Desiree Balota, Trina Marie Catipay and Dominic Quilantang. This was followed by the tribute of the performanc­e artist, John Paul Arias. Hazel Ann Cesa will interpret one of de Jesus’s poems.

A series of talks on the different genres followed: Travel writing with Johanna Michelle Lim, Writing Gay with Roehl Dazo, Acting in Cebuano with Maria Victoria Beltran, Contempora­ry Cebuano Literature with Cindy Velasquez, Of Horror Stories with Jondy Arpilleda, which concluded with a panel discussion on Fake News with Jason Baguia, Trizer Dale Mansueto, and Charles Dominic Sanchez.

Poets Erlinda Alburo and Ester Tapia also talked about their most recent book, Duhawit.

On April 21, talks and presentati­ons included Independen­t Publishing with Erik Tuban, Writing for Children with Lamberto Ceballos, Women’s Writing with Liean Jane Haney Rama, Cebuano Features with Alsteine Joi Diapana, The Cebu Lit Fest with Hendri Go, Contempora­ry Cebuano Art with Ivy Marie Apa, and a panel discussion To FB or Not To FB with Kevin Lagunda, Julius Cesar Cudera, and Dolph Verallo.

Felicitas, a Cebuano classic novel by Uldarico Alviola and translated into Filipino by Joanne Marisse Tan was also launched by the Cebuano Studies Center.
