Cebu’s future in theater

- SAM COSTANILLA samcost@yahoo.com

THEATER. I agree with Hong Kong-based Cebuano director Allan Nazareno’s observation that the future of Cebu theater is still not too promising since very little theater is practiced and promoted on a regular basis here. If I may add, Cebu theater at present is not getting any financial support from local government units, which is understandable, simply because public funds cannot be used for cultural ventures organized by private entities.

STAGE PLAYS.

I’m looking forward to the day when moneyed individuals here would produce musicals and other theater presentations. As we all notice, campus stage plays seldom come by, unlike in the ‘90s when some colleges and universities succeeded in presenting campus stage plays almost on a regular basis. I wish that would happen again soon

MUSIC.

I admire musician Val Dinopol for his own effort in promoting Cebuano music by relaunching his pet project named Music Made In Cebu Part 7. He told me that the event will be held at Handuraw Pizza White Gold for two nights. On June 9, the performers are Rommel Tuico, Abbys, Southwings, MC Rey and Equals Intensity.

FREE.

Val also informed me that the following night, the Dos Compañeros comic duo, Smooth Friction, Zarah Smith and PG 18 are the featured artists. The event is free for the general public. The two-night event has Retro 103.5 FM as official radio station.

SHOW.

On Wednesday, a variety show in Medellin will delight the general public. Its entertainers are Cebu Popular Music Festival grand champ June Villarta, the Bulabog Boys comic duo, Epoy the Magician and the Hotchix Dancers. Joining me as coemcee will be the multi-awarded Jet Gonzales. (For reactions, call or text 0932-277-8771.)
