Summer is definitely fun for young sports enthusiasts in Cebu City with the 2018 Summer Grassroots Sports Program offering various free sports clinics in 20 public schools.

Thousands of kids in the entry level enlisted in the program being conducted by the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) with the vision to help the children learn their chosen sport.

The summer program, now on its eighth year, started last April 9 and is set to end with a competition on May 5 at the Cebu City Sports Center.

“So far, the program has a very positive and consistent response. The quality of trainers has improved so much,” CCSC chairman Edward Hayco told Sun Star Cebu.

“The volunteers have programs to implement. I can say that these kids are ready for their intramurals after the training,” said Hayco, who added that there are about 500 volunteer coaches for this program.

One of the volunteer coaches in boxing, John Ro Taneo, said that the reason he volunteered for this was to share his knowledge with beginners. He also enlisted his nephews in this training.

“I brought them so they will have something to do this summer and they can refrain from playing computer games,” said Taneo, referring to his nephews Chris Mark and Elijah Bacalla.

One of the students, Cresniel Wyn Cansico, 7, a Grade 2 student of City Central School, said he wants to learn boxing and that’s why he joined the free clinic.

Zean Kaye Marikit, a Grade 4 student of Evangelical Theological College of the Philippines, selected gymnastics. “This is my first time. I’ve learned the basics already and I’m excited to compete,” she said.

Aside from boxing and gymnastics, the summer grassroots program offers archery, athletics, air rifle, arnis, badminton, beach volleyball, chess, muay thai, dancesports, futsal, karatedo, lawn tennis, pencak silat, scrabble, sepak takraw, softball/baseball, table tennis, taekwondo, touch rugby, volleyball, weightlifting and wushu.

The clinics are held in 20 public schools in Cebu. /
