New member rules Cepca monthly tournament

-

Former Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) Joselito Loques sneaked past three other chess wizards in a tiebreaker to win the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) Monthly Qualifying Tournament.

Loques, who previously worked as a maintenance officer in Qatar, scored 22.5 tiebreak points to outlast Atty. Jong Melendez, Rogelio Enriquez Jr. and Reynaldo Flores last Sunday at the J Centre Mall in Mandaue City.

The four chess wizards were tied with five points after six rounds, thus the tiebreaker. Melendez placed second, Enriquez dropped to third place and Flores was at fourth place.

Loques, a new member of Cepca, clinched a slot to the grandfinals in December, joining the other monthly champions, namely: Eduard dela Torre (January), Mario Bustillo (February) and Rogelio Enriquez Jr. (March).

The monthly tournament organized by Cepca in partnership with J Centre Mall garnered 38 chess players.

On the other hand, Adrian Basilgo topped the Cepca Juniors and Kiddies Chess Monthly Tournament held last April 28 and 29 in the same venue.

Basilgo won the 20-Under category for April to foil the back-toback hopes of March champion Christian Pondoyo, who settled for second place. Jethro Capariño placed third.

Aldritz Pondoyo won the 16-Under, Rogel Panilagao was second and Michael Larosa placed third.

Aaron Resma topped the 12-Under, while Jervy Villarin and Richard Gohetia Jr. finished second and third, respectively. /
